Overview of the VideoLAN project
VideoLAN is a complete software solution for video streaming and playback, developed by students of the Ecole

What is "XMPlay"?
XMPlay is an audio player. It's a free piece of software that Ian Luck has written in his spare time back in 1998 and
luckily continued development until today. You might have heard that XMPlay is the world's most accurate module
player. That's right, but XMPlay is much more - it has grown into a fast, slim and beautiful multi-purpose audio tool
that lets you manage your music library, listen to a wide variety of audio formats and even lets you save internet
radio streams to disk.
Regarding audio quality, many users say that XMPlay just sounds better than a lot of other software out there,
including Winamp and Foobar 2000, not to mention the most accurate module playback. That is because XMPlay
does not use any of the MP3 decoding libraries that come pre-installed with Windows. XMPlay uses it's own
routines to play MP3 and a lot of other formats which are supported right after you "install" XMPlay.
Where do I get it?
The primary download location for XMPlay is the Un4seen Developments website, which offers two mirrors for the
latest binary. The other place where you can get a copy is the XMPlay Archive, which also offers all previously
released versions for reference, bug hunting and nostalgia. The file name indicates which version you have
downloaded. The downloads in the XMPlay Archive also contain minor version numbering for clarity.
XMPlay is an audio player, supporting the OGG / MP3 / MP2 / MP1 / WMA / WAV / AIFF / CDA / MO3 / IT / XM /
S3M / MTM / MOD / UMX audio formats, and PLS / M3U / ASX / WAX playlists. A load more formats is also
supported via plugins. When XMPlay was first released in 1998, only the XM format was supported, hence the
name "XMPlay".

7-Zip is able to open some MSI files, allowing access to the meta-files within along with the main contents. Some
Microsoft CAB (LZX compression) and NSIS (LZMA) installer formats can be opened, meaning that 7-Zip can be
used to check if a binary file is an archive. Similarly, some executable programs (.EXEs) may be opened as
archives and have their contents extracted by 7-Zip.
When compressing ZIP or gzip files, 7-Zip uses a home-brewed DEFLATE encoder which is often able to achieve
higher compression levels than the more common DEFLATE implementation of zlib, at the expense of compression
speed. The 7-Zip deflate encoder implementation is available separately as part of the AdvanceCOMP suite of

Clonezilla is a partition or disk clone tool similar to Norton Ghost®. It saves and restores only used blocks in hard
drive. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (Server Edition).
Features:
You're probably familiar with the popular proprietary commercial package Norton Ghost®, and its OpenSource
counterpart, Partition Image. The problem with these software packages is that it takes a lot of time to massively
clone systems to many computers. You've probably also heard of Symantec's solution to this problem, Symantec
Ghost Corporate Edition® with multicasting. Well, now there is an OpenSource clone system (OCS) solution called
Clonezilla with unicasting and multicasting!
Clonezilla, based on DRBL, Partition Image, ntfsclone, partclone, and udpcast, allows you to do bare metal backup
and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live
is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone
many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the harddisk. This
increases the clone efficiency. At the NCHC's Classroom C, Clonezilla SE was used to clone 41 computers
simultaneously. It took only about 10 minutes to clone a 5.6 GBytes system image to all 41 computers via
multicasting!
Features of Clonezilla
* Free (GPL) Software.
* Filesystem supported: ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs, xfs, jfs of GNU/Linux, FAT, NTFS of MS Windows, and HFS+ of
Mac OS. Therefore you can clone GNU/Linux, MS windows and Intel-based Mac OS, no matter it's 32-bit (x86)
or 64-bit (x86-64) OS. For these file systems, only used blocks in partition are saved and restored. For
unsupported file system, sector-to-sector copy is done by dd in Clonezilla.
* LVM2 (LVM version 1 is not) under GNU/Linux is supported.
* Multicast is supported in Clonezilla SE, which is suitable for massively clone. You can also remotely use it to save
or restore a bunch of computers if PXE and Wake-on-LAN are supported in your clients.
* Based on Partimage, ntfsclone, partclone, and dd to clone partition. However, clonezilla, containing some other
programs, can save and restore not only partitions, but also a whole disk.
* By using another free software drbl-winroll, which is also developed by us, the hostname, group, and SID of
cloned MS windows machine can be automatically changed.
Limitations
* The destination partition must be equal or larger than the source one.
* Differential/incremental backup is not implemented yet.
* Online imaging/cloning is not implemented yet. The partition to be imaged or cloned has to be unmounted.
* Software RAID/fake RAID is not supported by default. It's can be done manually only.
Which Clonezilla Shall I Use?
* Clonezilla Live: Clonezilla live allows you to use CD/DVD or USB flash drive to boot and run clonezilla (Unicast
only)
* Clonezilla SE: Clonezilla SE is included in DRBL, therefore a DRBL server must first be set up in order to use
Clonezilla to do massively clone (unicast, broadcast and multicast are supported)

This fun app that's part music player, part Web browser, and all about music discovery, management, and playback
is ready for every day use.
During installation, it'll ask if you want to load your iTunes music directory or another media directory, or perform the
task later. Processing 5,000 songs took about 3 minutes, which is not a bad pace. It then asks you which of the
preinstalled Songbird extensions you want to load. Most of these, like the iPod, Mass Storage Class, and USB
device managers only make the app stronger.
The left sidebar provides quick links to bookmarks, downloads, your music library in an iTunes-style interface, and
several music discovery Web sites to get you started. When you're looking at any Web site with MP3s available for
download, Songbird will open a new window at the bottom of the main browsing pane. Double-click on a song to
play it, and links on the right let you purchase the track from Amazon, iTunes, eMusic, and Amie St. They also tell
you the format of the track--MP3 or AAC, for example--and provide a blog link for more info.
Songbird has a growing library of extensions, and support is slowly growing for those written originally for Firefox.
Although it works on Windows 7, it doesn't yet have any Windows 7-specific features. Still, Songbird is more than

I have loaded 27 of these programs onto my Pin / Flash Drive and am only using 1.5 Gb of the available space.
Most of the applications on this site are versions of the same software we are using in the Computerbuddies
program. The advantage is, these will fit on a pin / flash drive and they do not load any drivers or files on the host
machine. This is especially important for students going to school or employees going to work, where there are
restrictions on what software is allowed to be loaded onto the workstations.
