One of my Japanese friends once told me: “I can manage our language, which has hundreds of
different characters; but I just can’t manage a language that has only 26 characters or letters.”
“Yes, indeed,” I answered, “There are thousands of different characters in my native language, I
can manage over 90% of them; Unfortunately, I’m also unable to manage a language which has only
26 characters.”
It’s hard to learn English. Let me show you some examples: you fill in a form by filling it out
and an alarm clock goes off by going on. You get in and out of a car, yet you get on and off a bus.
When the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why,
when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it? English is a strange
language ... it doesn't seem know if it is coming or going!
