twelve most commontests are outlinedbelow and describedin detailin the followingchapters.
CAUTION
The scopeobtainsits power to operatefrom the 12
voltcar battery.lf you are servicinga vehiclewith a 6
volt batterysystem,you mustuse a 12 volt auxiliary
batteryfor the scope. Connecta jumper wire betweenthe negative(-)terminalof the auxiliarybattery

BASICSCOPEPATTERNS
4-1. INTRODUCTION.
A. The ignitionsystemis one of the most importantsystems of a gasolineengine.lt deliversthe sparkto fire the
rightcylinderat preciselythe righttimewhilecompensating for the enginespeedand load.Properfunctioningof
thissystemand each of its manycomponentsis criticalto
the efficientoperationof the engine.
B. The oscilloscope
is a precisioninstrument
usedto cjiagnoseproblemsin the ignitionsystemwhilethe engineis
running.By representing
the voltagecircuitsof the ignition
systemas waveformpatternson a monitor,a technician
candiagnosethe condition
of eachcomponentin the system.Thismanualgraphically
depictsnormaland unsatisfactorypatternsfor eachtestfacilitating
easydiagnosisof
the ignitionsystem.To utilizethe oscilloscopefully,the
technician
shouldfamiliarize
himselfwiththe variousfunctiondisplaysof the oscilloscope,
the basicpatternof each
