Alimentazione a batteria Figure 8: Front panel, laser base station Figure 6: Treatment kit with single-use blunt-ended irrigation tip and single-use light-diffusing tip The indicators on the top panel of the laser base station are as follows: • Laser On Indicator. The green light at the top of the top panel indicates that the laser is in use and emitting light. • Laser Ready Light. After turning on the laser base station, this green light blinks for about 5 seconds while the system is performing internal checks. After this period the light stays permanently lit, indicating that the laser is ready to be used. • Visible Progress Indicator. A series of blue LEDs in an elliptical pattern are located around the PERIOWAVE™ logo. Each LED is sequentially illuminated until all LEDs are lit at the end of the treatment cycle. • Audible Beep. There is an audible beep at the end of the laser illumination treatment period. Figure 7: Single-use light-diffusing tip 1.3 MODE OF ACTION The primary mode of action for PERIOWAVE™ is disruption of the microbial cell wall. The topically applied photosensitizer selectively stains bacteria by binding with cell wall components. The laser light is absorbed by the photosensitizer molecules, causing electronic state transitions within the photosensitizer. The excited photosensitizer immediately transfers energy to surrounding molecular oxygen, thereby producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are responsible for lethally disrupting the bacterial cell wall. These species are very short-lived, and the ROS-production process ceases immediately upon deactivation of the laser. Low-intensity red light absorbed by oral tissue does not cause heating or other gross morphological alterations. • Test Light (GO/NO-GO indicator). This green indicator is connected to the laser power test port. Use of this port is further described in Section 4.3 below. The test port is used to verify continuity of the optical light path between the laser base station and the distal end of the handpiece. • AC Light. When illuminated this light indicates that the unit is running on AC power. • Battery Light. This is adjacent to the battery symbol and flashes blue when the laser base station must be reconnected to AC power in order to recharge the battery. 2.0 USAGE INFORMATION 2.1 PERIOWAVE™ USAGE PERIOWAVE™ is designed for use in a dental clinic by a qualified and duly trained dental professional. A training program on clinical use and equipment care and maintenance is provided free of charge prior to first use. PERIOWAVE™ should not be used in the presence of flammable mixtures. 2.2 CONTROLS AND ACCESSORIES “Laser Ready” light. After turning on the laser base station the elliptical LED’s/visible progress indicator will cycle (illuminate sequentially) twice while the system is performing internal checks. This will take approximately 10 seconds. After completing the internal checks the “Laser Ready” light should come on indicating that the laser is ready to be used.
