fourth article, Coco Norén takes the Internet as her starting point,
which leads to a discussion of rules and principles in a French language chat site. The discussion is based on her participation in the
chat and her intentional breaking of the rules in order to understand
the principles, the reactions of the other participants and the sanctions. This contribution is followed by an article, based on a video
recording from a television broadcast, in which Mathias Broth
demonstrates different ways to profit from quantitative methods in
interactional analysis. The author finds that the quantitative approach can be valid for interactional analyses but that it has to be
supplemented with other approaches.
In this volume, a majority of the articles treat aspects of modern
French and cover a broad spectrum of research fields. Most of the
studies are based on written material, but there are also samples of
spoken language. These materials enable the authors to define
characteristics of different text genres, ranging from formal to informal language. The authors also present interesting theoretical,
terminological and grammatical analyses of linguistic phenomena
and usage at different levels of written and spoken language.
