The first president of the United States was born in February 1732 in
Virginia. His parents owned three plantations and lived comfortably. We
do not know much about his childhood, which seems to have been a
happy one. When he was eleven, his father died and he went to live
with his brother on a plantation called Mount Vernon. He later inherited
this mansion, where he retired and died.

2. A REVOLUTIONARY LEADER
Although he was not a very good orator, Jefferson
became a leading figure in the revolt against
England. In 1776 he drafted the Declaration
of Independence which reflects his political
philosophy:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all
men are created equal, that they are endowed
by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,
that among these are Life, Liberty and the
pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights,
Governments are instituted among Men, deriving
their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
2. A BRILLIANT SOLDIER
In 1779 he became Governor of Virginia and he
occupied this post during the difficult time of the
War of Independence. After the war, in 1785, he
was sent to France as minister and stayed in Paris
for five years.

In 1801 Thomas Jefferson became
the third President of the US and the
first one to reside in Washington,
DC, a city he had helped to plan.
During his two terms of office, his
most important decision was taken
in 1803, when he bought a huge
territory known as “Louisiana” for
60 million francs from Napoleon.
The “Louisiana Purchase” doubled
the size of the USA and opened
the way to the west.

George was tall and strong with blue eyes and dark
hair. He was practical, serious and honest. When he was
22 he became a soldier and fought in the wars against
the French and the Indians. He was even proclaimed
Commander-in-Chief.
In 1759, George Washington married Martha Curtis, a rich
widow with two children.
Ten years later, Washington became one of the insurgents who refused to pay high taxes to England. In 1775
he was elected General and Commander-in-Chief of the
American Army.
The War of Independence against England lasted for eight
years and during that time Washington lived with his
soldiers, allowing himself no luxuries and gaining his
men’s respect.

3. THE FIRST PRESIDENT
In 1789 George Washington was chosen as the first president of the new
nation. At the time, the capital was New York City. He was re-elected in
1792 and four years later he retired to Mount Vernon, where he died
in December 1799.
His name was given to the newly-built capital of the USA, and later to
a state on the west coast, and to more than a hundred towns, seven
mountains and ten lakes.
His picture appears on the dollar bill and on the quarter (25 cents) coin.
4. THE FATHER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
After 1809, Jefferson retired to Monticello, the house he had built for himself in
Virginia, and he spent the rest of his life creating the University of Virginia, which
opened in 1825. Edgar Alan Poe was one of the first students, and he attended
Jefferson’s funeral in 1826.
