Using Auxiliary Equipment Modems There are several ways to use modems with your system, as described below. NOTE: Modems can connect directly to an extension jack without an adapter. However, if you connect a high-speed modem through the control unit, you may experience some degradation of efficiency and throughput, depending on the quality of the central office lines connected to the system. To solve the problem, either connect modems directly to the network interface jacks, or contact your local telephone company for information about upgrading line quality. Stand-Alone Modem for Placing Calls Only A modem and a terminal allow you to dial out and connect to computer bulletin boards and other data services. This setup, which lets you dial out but not receive calls, is shown in Figure 4-9. Note that the telephone is optional and can be used if you want the terminal to share an extension with a phone on any port. Telephone (optional) Lines Ext. If extension X is a key extension, use Line Assignment (#301) to assign one or more lines to extension X. If extension Y is a pooled extension, use Pool Extension Assignment (#314) to assign the pools you want the modem to use to extension X. Also use Line Assignment (#301) to assign any individual lines you want the modem to use to extension X. 4-18
