J- Link JTAG I solat or
Introduction
The J- Link JTAG I solat or can be connect ed bet ween J- Link ARM and any ARMboard t hat uses t he st andard 20- pin JTAG- ARM connect or t o provide elect rical
isolat ion. This is essent ial when t he developm ent t ools are not connect ed t o
t he sam e ground as t he applicat ion. I t is also useful t o prot ect t he
developm ent t ools from elect rical spikes t hat oft en occur in som e applicat ions,
such as m ot or cont rol applicat ions.
A 20- pin flat cable ( supplied wit h J- Link) is needed t o connect t he t arget .
Power supply
Bot h sides, t arget and em ulat or, are t ot ally isolat ed and separat ely powered.
The t arget side draws power from pins 1 or 2, t he em ulat or side draws power
from pin 19.

Connectors and indicators
The I solat or uses high speed opt ocouplers t hat allow a very low propagat ion
t im e bet ween input and out put . I t com es wit h t he following connect ors and
indicat ors:
• 20- pin fem ale EMULATOR connect or which can be plugged direct ly int o JLink
• 20- pin m ale TARGET connect or for connect ion of t he t arget cable
• Green LED indicat ing power on t he em ulat or side
• Green LED indicat ing power on t he t arget side
• Red LED indicat ing RESET

The Em ulat or side of t he I solat or is plugged direct ly int o t he Em ulat or. The
Target side is connect ed t o t he t arget via a 20- pin flat cable.
Using the Isolator with J-Link
I n order t o use t he I solat or, follow t hese st eps:

Plug t he I solat or direct ly int o J- Link.
Power J- Link.
Make sure t he green LED on t he em ulat or side is lit . I f it is not , follow t he
inst ruct ion in t he next sect ion.
Connect t he t arget via 20- pin flat cable t o t he t arget side of t he I solat or.
I f t he t arget is powered, t he green LED on t he t arget side should be lit .
The red LED on t he t arget side is lit when a Target RESET is act ive ( low) .
Preparing J-Link to supply power
J- Link needs t o supply 5V power t o t he em ulat or side of t he adapt er on pin 19.
I n order t o do t his, you m ay have t o configure J- Link once as follows:
• Make sure t hat SEGGER J- Link soft ware is inst alled on your m achine.
I t can be downloaded from ht t p: / / www.segger.com / download_j link.ht m l
• St art J- Link Com m ander, which can be found under “ Start -> Programs > SEGGER -> J-Link ARM”
• Ent er t he following com m and: power on perm
• Plug in t he adapt er: The LED on t he em ulat or side should now be lit .
Using the Isolator with an other ARM emulator
The I solat or has been designed for J- Link, but can also be used wit h ot her ARM
em ulat ors wit h t he sam e pin- out . I n t his case, you should m ake sure t hat 5V
are supplied t o pin 19 of t he em ulat or connect or and t hat your em ulat or is not
dam aged when applying 5V t o t his pin. D o t his a t you r ow n r isk !
