UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS Universal Precautions should be followed on all specimens, regardless of whether a specimen is known to contain an infectious agent. Universal Precautions have been stated by Center for Disease Control in 1987 and updated in 1988 and are reprinted in National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards proposed guidelines, “Protection of Laboratory Workers From Occupationally Acquired Infections”, Approved Standard, NCCLS Document M29-A2, 2001 (NCCLS, National Office, 940 West Valley Road, Suite 1400, Wayne, PA 190871898, USA).
