UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS
Universal Precautions should be followed on all specimens,
regardless of whether a specimen is known to contain an
infectious agent. Universal Precautions have been stated by
Center for Disease Control in 1987 and updated in 1988 and
are reprinted in National Committee for Clinical Laboratory
Standards proposed guidelines, “Protection of Laboratory
Workers From Occupationally Acquired Infections”, Approved
Standard, NCCLS Document M29-A2, 2001 (NCCLS, National
Office, 940 West Valley Road, Suite 1400, Wayne, PA 190871898, USA).
