Check for any participant status changes since the last session:
o Any after-effects from the last training session?
o Any practice carried out?
o Any wheelchair changes?
o Any new health concerns? (Invite participants to speak to you privately,
before beginning the warm-up activity.)
Review the general purpose of the training sessions – to improve specific wheelchair
skills in order to prevent injury and overcome environmental barriers.
Have each participant independently review his/her overall goals for the series of
training sessions, revising them if appropriate
Explain the planned activities for the current session
Warm-up activity:
• An activity designed to warm up the muscles, heart and lungs.
• The activity should include some skills that have already been learned or, if
the 1st session, skills that the trainer knows from the intake assessments that
all participants can perform.
• A game (see Games section of the WSTP Manual) can be a fun way to carry
out this activity.
• Activity:
__________________________________________________________
C. Practice “Old” Skills (15 minutes)
• Remind participants of the rationale for practicing skills that have already been
learned – need practice to refine them, build efficiency, explore various ways to
perform them and generalize them to different settings
• Generally using a random order for practicing the old skills is ideal, but it is
acceptable to begin with less stressful ones
• Practice old skills in a variety of settings and using a variety of methods
• For the old-skill practice, the trainer provides structure and safety, keeping feedback
to a minimum
• Individualize the difficulty level to the extent possible
• List of old skills:
1. Performs stationary wheelie (30 sec)
2. Turns in place in wheelie position (180°)
3. Descends 10° incline in wheelie position
D. Practice “New” Skills (ones that have yet to be acquired or perfected) (15
minutes)
