Operating the Bed Height Adjustment Raising the bed : Using the height adjustment pedal situated half way along the base chassis, labelled ‘raise’, depress the pedal with a pumping action. This will raise the bed to the desired height. Lowering the bed: Pressing the opposite end of the height adjustment pedal, labelled ’lower’, will lower the bed. Lowers bed Raises bed Mattress Platform Tilt Head Down Tilt: Firmly support the bed and raise the right hand tilt handle, situated at the foot end of the mattress platform. While holding the handle lift the mattress frame up to a maximum of 12º in 2º increments to the desired level of tilt. Releasing the handle will lock the bed in the required position. Foot Down Tilt: Firmly support the bed and raise both tilt handles, situated at the footend of the mattress platform. While holding both handles lower the footend to a maximum of 6º in 2º increments. Releasing the handle will lock the bed in the required position. 4 To Level the Bed: Firmly support the bed and raise the right hand tilt handle, situated at the footend of the mattress platform, while holding the handle raise or lower the footend until it is level. When operating the tilt function always ensure the lock pin has engaged after the handle is released. Braking and Steering There are two linked brake pedals at the foot end of the bed which control all the castors simultaneously. •When the pedal is in the ‘steer’ position it locks one castor on the bed so that it cannot swivel. This allows the bed to be steered when being pushed from the head end of the bed. •When the pedal is in the ‘free’ position no castors are locked, allowing all to swivel freely. •When the pedal is in the ‘brake’ position three castors are locked and the bed then cannot move. 5 Raising and Lowering the Backrest Raising: Lift the backrest operating lever on the mattress platform. While holding the lever lift the backrest to the desired angle. Note: The heavier the patient the harder it will be to lift the backrest. Lowering: Lift the backrest operating lever and push the backrest down to the desired position. Note: The backrest may drop under it’s own weight when the lever is lifted, depending on the weight of the patient. Backrest operating lever Bed Extension To extend: Unscrew both handwheels situated at the footend of the mattress frame and pull out the extension with both hands. Re-tighten the handwheels to lock the extension in place. To return to standard length: Unscrew both handwheels and push Handwheel the extension back into the normal position. Secure in place by tightening the handwheels. 6 5. Do’s & Don’ts Do ensure you read these instructions and fully understand them before setting up or using the bed. Do ensure the bed is cleaned on a regular basis. Do ensure the bed is inspected on a regular basis (minimum once yearly service). Do ensure the lock pin has re-engaged after tilting the mattress platform. Do Not exceed the beds safe working load of 180kg (28 stone). Do Not use the rising backrest feature to lift the occupant. Do Not store any items under the bed. Do Not allow children to play with or under the bed. Do Not allow any part of the bed or mattress to come into contact with any naked flame or excessive heat sources. 7 6. Cleaning Procedure Biocote: Your bed comes with an antibacterial additive incorporated into the powder coated metalwork. Biocote™ inhibits the growth of bacteria on the surface of the bed frame. It is effective against a wide range of both gram positive and negative bacteria as well as fungi. Examples of bacteria that Biocote™ is resistant to include: Bacillus Subtilis Escerichia Coli 0157 Salmonella Enteritides Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) Streptococcus Faecalis Listeria Monocytogenes Biocote™ is an aid to keeping your bed infection free but it does not substitute the need for the bed to be cleaned at regular intervals. Cleaning: All surfaces to be wiped down with a soft cloth moistened with a mild detergent (or the hospital’s recommended cleaning solution) and diluted in hot water. Extra care should be taken around areas where excess dirt or dust may gather. Rinse down with clean water and dry off with a paper towel. If any infectious material(s) have been in contact with the bed or it has been used by a patient with a known infection, the above procedure should be followed by an additional clean with NaDCC (Presept, Actichlor) at 10,000 PPM of Chlorine (or instructions as prescribed by manufacturer). Rinse and dry again. Always ensure that cleaned parts are allowed to dry before putting the mattress back in place. 8 7. Maintenance The Kings Fund Bed is designed to require very little maintenance, however if there are any signs of damage, or the bed is not performing as it should, then please contact your supplier for further assistance. Any maintenance should only be carried out by suitably qualified personnel. Periodically check to ensure that all fixings including nuts and bolts, are tight and that none are missing. Check that all cables are in good condition and not excessively kinked. Sidhil recommends these checks be carried out annually. If the bed does not operate: • Check that the bed is free of any obstacles. • Check that the maximum load has not been exceeded. • Check that the bed has not reached it’s minimum or maximum height. • Check that the pedal used to raise and lower the bed is free of any obsatcles. 8.
