relies on MS ActiveSync and MS Access as the backbone of their system where as
STEFS uses HTTP and SQL Server CE, allowing multi-thread data transmissions so that
multiple PocketPCs can communicate simultaneously. Table 6.3 compares STEFS to
FDR.

ESRI'S (http://www.esri.com) ArcPad also allows for environmental data entry.
ArcPad's focus is on displaying collected data on an electronic map. Users can click
directly on a map and using layers, enter the data for a specific measurement at any point.
Integration with GPS sensors allow the user to know where they are and enter the data for
that location. ArcPad does not make use of wireless technologies. It does have an
abundance of Windows-based and Web-based applications which can interact with data
collected in ArcPad such as ArcIMS and ArcView. STEFS main benefits over ArcPad is
