Some examples of companies in this sector include BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Pennzoil and Total Fina. Equity Equity is a unit of ownership in a company and is sometimes called stocks or share. When you buy equity, you become a business owner, and the value of your ownership stake will rise and fall according to the success of the underlying business.
