Too heavyof a load, while on a slope, is dangerous.Tires can lose tractionwith the groundand cause you to lose control ofyourtractor. BEFORE STARTINGTHE ENGINE CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL The engine in your tractor has been shipped, from the factory, already filled with summer weight oil. 1. Check engine oil with tractor on level ground. 2. Remove oil fill cap/dipstick and wipe clean, reinsert the dipstick and screw cap tight, wait for a few seconds, remove and read oil level. If necessary, add oil until "FULL" mark on dipstick is reached. Do not overfill. • For cold weather operation you should change oil for easier starting (See =OIL VISCOSITY CHART _in the Maintenance section of this manual). • To change engine oil, see the Maintenance section in this manual. oi,Fil, cap/ _/__ 14 Dipstick ADD GASOLINE • Fillfuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regular unleaded gasolinewith a minimumof 87 octane. (Use of leaded gasoline will increase carbon and lead oxide depositsand reducevalve life). Do not mix oil with gasoline. Purchasefuel in quantities that can be used within 30 days to assure fuel freshness. IMPORTANT: When operatingin temperaturesbelow32°F(0°C), use fresh, clean winter grade gasolineto help insure good cold weather starting. 4_WARNING: Experienceindicatesthat alcoholblended fuels (called gasoholor using ethanolor methanol)can attract moisturewhich leads to separationand formationof acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To avoidengine problems, the fuel system shouldbe emptiedbeforestorageof 30 daysor longer. Drain the gas tank, startthe engine and let it run untilthe fuel lines and carburetorare empty. Use freshfuel next season. See Storage Instructions for additionalinformation. Never use engine or carburetorcleaner productsin the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur. _1_CAUTION: Fillto bottomof gastank fillerneck. Do not overfill. Wipe off any spilledoil or fuel. Do not store, spillor use gasolinenear an open flame. TO START ENGINE Whenstarting theenginefor the firsttimeorif theenginehasrunoutoffuel, itwilltakeextra crankingtimetomovefuel fromthetankto the engine. 1. Sit on seat in operatingposition, depress clutch/brakepedal and set parking brake. 2. Place gear shift lever in neutral(N) position. 3. Move attachmentclutchto =DISENGAGED" position. 4. Move throttlecontrolto choke position. NOTE: Beforestarting, readthewarmand coldstartingproceduresbelow. 5. Insertkey intoignitionand turnkey 15 clockwise to "START" position and release key as soon as engine starts. Do not run starter continuously for more than fifteen seconds per minute. If the engine does not start after several attempts, move throttle control to fast position, wait a few minutes and try again. If engine still does not start, move the throttle control back to the choke position and retry. WARM WEATHER STARTING (50° F and above) 6. When engine starts, move the throttle control to the fast position. • The attachments and ground drive can now be used. If the engine does not accept the load, restart the engine and allow it to warm up for One minute using the choke as described above. COLD WEATHER STARTING ( 50° F and below) 6. When engine starts, allow engine to run with the throttle control in the choke position until the engine runs roughly, then move throttle control to fast.position. This may require an engine warm-up period from several seconds to several minutes, depending on the temperature. • The attachments can also be used during the engine warm-up period. NOTE: If at a high altitude (above 3000 feet) or in cold temperatures (below 32 F) the carburetor fuel mixture may need to be adjusted for best engine performance. See "TO ADJUST CARBURETOR" in the Service and Adjustments section of this manual. MOWINGTIPS • Mower shouldbe propedyleveledfor I_estmowingperformance. See "TO LEVEL MOWER HOUSING" in the Service and AdjustmentssecUonof this manual. • The left hand side of mower shouldbe used for trimming. • Drive so that clippingsare discharged ontothe area that has been cut. Have the cutarea to the right of the tractor. This will resultin a more even distribution of clippingsand more uniform cutting. • When mowinglarge areas, start by turningto the right So that clippingswill dischargeaway from shrubs, fences, driveways, etc. After one or two rounds, mow in the oppositedirection making left handturns until finished. • If grass is extremelytall, it shouldbe mowed twice to reduceload and possiblefire hazard from dried clippings. Make firstcut relativelyhigh; the secondto the desired height, • Do not mow grasswhen it is wet. Wet grass will plug mower and leave undesirableclumps. Allow grass to dry before mowing. • Always operate engine at full throttle when mowing to assurebetter mowing performanceand properdischargeof material. Regulate groundspeed by selectinga low enoughgear to give the mowercuttingperformanceas well as the qualityof cut desired. • When operatingattachments, selecta groundspeed that will suit the terrain and give best performanceOfthe attachmentbeing used. [ MULCHING MOWINGTIPS IMPORTANT: For best performance, keep mower housing free ot built-up grass and trash. Clean after each use. • The special mulching blade will recut the grass clippings many times and reduce them in size so that as they fall onto the lawn they will disperse into the grass and not be noticed. Also, the mulched grass will biodegrade quickly to provide nutdents for the lawn. Always mulch with your highest engine (blade) speed as this will provide the best recufting action of the blades. • Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet. Wet grass tends to form clumps and interferes with the mulching action. The best time to mow your lawn is the early afternoon. At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut area will not be exposed to the direct sun. • For best results, adjust the mower cutting height so that the mower cuts off only the top one-third of the grass blades. For extremely heavy mulching, reduce your width of cut on each pass and mow slowly. • Certain types of grass and grass conditions may require that an area be mulched a second time to completely hide the clippings. When doing a second cut, mow across or perpendicular to the first cut path. • Change your cutting pattern from week to week. Mow north to south one week then change to east to west the next week. This will help prevent matting and graining of the lawn. +,°x ,,++ I 16 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE FILL iN DA_ES AS YOU COMPLETE REGULAR SERVtCE SERVICE CheCk Brske Operation I_ I_ Check1"IrePressu{e CheckOperatorPresenceand IntedeckSystems if t_ li_ Check for Loose Fasteners V# Shsrpen/Replsce 1_7 Mower Blades DATES I_ 11_4 I.ubrtca,on Chart M Check Battery Loved Clean Battery and Terminals _ CheckTrensaxleCocting I_ A_t_t Blade Bsit(e) Tension (#d s Adjust M0{_onDrive Bolt(s) Tension Ks / CheCk Engine Oil Level _ (1_ Change Engine OII k_,l C_un Air Filter I_ Ciesn Air Screen I_,=pect MJeri$perk I1_ II_z An_ster I_ Replace Oil Finer (if equipped} I_1.= Clesn Englr_ Cooling Fins i#1_ Replace Spark Plug g_ Replace Nr Filter Paper Cartridge _= Replace Fuel Rtler t - Chlclgo _ oiton wheh Opef_dl_ _ mhl4r._y told m kl _ 2. TIRES • Maintain proper air pressure in all tires (See =PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS" section of this manual). • Keep tires tree ot gasoline, oil, or insect control Ghemioals which can harm rubber. • Avoid stumps, stones, deep ruts, sharp objects and other hazards that may cause tire damage. NOTE: To seal tire punctures and prevent flat tires due to slow leaks, tire sealant may be purchased from your local parts dealer. Tire sealant also prevents tire dry rot and corrosion. OPERATOR PRESENCE SYSTEM Be sure operator presence and interlock systems are working properly, tf your tractor does not function as described, repair the problem immediately. • The engine should not start unless the clutch/brake pedal is fully depressed and attachement clutch control is in the disengaged position. • When the engine is running, any attempt by the operator to leave the seat without first setting the parking brake should shut off the engine. • When the engine is running and the attachment clutch is engaged, any attempt by the operator to leave the seat should shut off the engine. • The attachment clutch should never operate unless the operator is in the seat. ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM IMPORTANT: It Is importantto prevent gum depositasfrom forming in essential fuel systemparts such as carburetor, fuel 27 hose, or tank during storage. Also, axperiance indicates that alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of and engine while in storage. 1. Drain the fuel tank. 2. Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty. • Never usa engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur. • Usa fresh fuel next season. NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative in minimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during storage. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage container. Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer container. Run engine at least 10 minutes after adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reach the carburetor. Do not drain the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer. ENGINE OIL Drain oil (with engine warm) and replace with clean engine oil. (See =ENGINE" in the Maintenance section of this manual). CYLINDER(S) 1. Remove spark plug(s). 2. Pour one ounce of oil through spark plug hole(s) into cylinder(s). 3. Tum ignition key to "START" position for a few seconds to distribute oil. 4. Replace with new spark plug(s). OTHER • Do not store gasoline from one season to another. • Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in your gasoline will cause problems, • If possible, store your tractor indoors and cover it to give protection from dust and dirt. • Cover your tractor with a suitable protective cover that does not retain moisture. Do not use plastic. Plastic cannot breathe which allows condensation to form and will cause your tractor to rust. IMPORTANT: Never cover tractor while engine and exhaust areas are still warm.
