Distinctive Ring (Requires Service) Distinctive Ring (Requires Service) Important: The distinctive ring function can only be used if you subscribe to a distinctive ring service from your telephone company. Do not turn on distinctive ring if you are on a normal line, as the machine will not operate properly. If you subscribe to a distinctive ring service from your telephone company (such as Fax Duet in Australia), turn on the distinctive ring function to have the machine signal voice calls and faxes by different ring patterns. The machine will automatically receive faxes. To turn on the distinctive ring function, set the “DISTINCTIVE RING” setting to YES as explained on pages 139 and 140. In addition, the reception mode must be set to AUTO. When your fax number is dialled, the machine will signal the call with a special ringing sound, then answer automatically and begin reception after the number of rings set with the Number of Rings setting (the initial setting is 2 rings—see page 140). When your voice number is dialled, the machine will signal the call with the normal ringing sound to let you know that you must answer personally. 138
