Meet The Authors
of 816/Paint Education
Robert Schwartz and Michael Callery
Roberta Schwartz and Michael Callery have each taught for over twenty
years, Roberta in junior high and Michael in college. While teaching they earned
extra income pursuing their art: Roberta exhibited for many years (and won
awards) in New York 's famous Greenwich Village Art Show among other
shows. Michael designed play-bills for off-off broad way theaters and created
custom-designed T-shirts and shopping bags.
When personal computers, specifically the Apple II computers, came on the
scene they both launched new careers. Michael first , then Roberta. A the
graphic editor of A+ and frequent contributors to other personal computer
magazines they are nationally known personal computer graphics experts.
Roberta has illustrated many educational games including the Scholastic Microzines. Michael has created curriculum software for many of the largest publishers including Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, and Laidlaw. Roberta and
Michael have worked together many times; their most famous project is the
Bank Street College Voyage of the Mimi on which Michael was the principle
programmer for the Navigation Games and Roberta the illustrator.
Education is firmly in their blood. They both still teach part-time at the New
School in New York City, the nation 's largest adult education program.

When a friend of mine decided to write a book on computers in education and
asked me to do the illustrations on the computer, I began to search for the perfect
graphics program. Baudville created that program for me! As a computer graphics
instructor, ·1 had worked with every graphics program that exists, past and present. I
decided on 816/Paint because it was capable of mi xing text and graphics as well a
using all Apple Hi-Res graphics modes .... and more! The ease of u e and the
flexibility of the program made it ideal for creating original illustrations as well as
enhancing screen dumps from educational software described in the text of the book.
816/Paint takes the art of illustration to a new dimension.
It would take a book of my own to de cribe the mrnions of way that I use 816/
Paint in my graphics classes at the university and my computer and art classes at a
local high school. We have created everything from busines cards to postcards with
stamps; animated video tapes to map of the school; and logos to electronic pai ntings. 816/Paint is the graphics program that has it ALL when it comes to creating art
on the computer!

Students create binary slide shows, actors and backgrounds with Blazing Paddles
(their favorite), Pixit, and Shapes & Fonts II. They utilize these files in animation

The only full-featured Paint program that
works with all Apple II computers.
One standard user interface, a consistent set of tool s
across all fou r Apple II graphic modes, and support fo r a
wide variety of printers and interfaces (see Quick Reference Chart) makes 8 16/Pai nt the program of cho ice for
school systems wi th a variety of Apple II computers.
The program 's file conversion utilit y makes it po si ble
to convert standard hi-res picture files t.o double hi-res.
Double high-res can be converted to Super hi -res. Ideal
for use with desktop publishing and other graphi cs utili ties.
8 16/Paint gives you the tools you need for wide open
graphic freedom : 12 brushes, freehand , lines, ai r-brush,
text and geometric shapes. The marq uee and lasso can be
used to select portions of a picture to copy, cut paste,
move or paint with. You may also stretch and shrink the
selected image. The french curve tool au tomatica ll y plots
a smooth curve through any num ber of points you designate on the screen.
Cycle through color palettes for pseudo-animation, or
adj ust the current one to sui t your needs. Eight separate
palettes operate at the same time, and you can c reate color
patterns and spreads that cover several of the palettes.
A SO-page spiral bound manual is well -illustrated,
concise, clearly organized, and indexed. The education
version includes a teachers guide and is listed on page 6.
816/Paint includes:
• 2 ProDos disks: a 3 1/2" 800 K disk for the App le LI Gs,
and a 5 1/4" disk fo r Apple lie and lie machines.
• Capab ility to read and write to DOS 3.3 for
compatability with ex isting App le LI graphics.
• An easy-to-use icon menu that works the same in all
graphics modes.
