Chapter 1 Step 3: Implementing your model ModelMaker is designed to mimic the process of conceptual model development as much as possible. The first step involves constructing a diagram on the screen which represents the various model parts. This diagram is composed of a series of ModelMaker components, each of which is intended for a different type of mathematical operation. Each component has a definition which can be edited to insert its equation and any other appropriate information. The next steps Once your model has been implemented, it can be run; the equations are solved, generating results that can be interpreted in graphs or tables. Validation of your model may involve checking the model results against observed data to test its predictive power. ModelMaker provides a series of facilities to make this as straightforward as possible. In practice model development is often very iterative. Having tested the model you are likely to find that some changes are required. Introduction 11
