Always turn off theTV and other components before you ¥ connect or disconnect any cables. POSITION AUDIO CABLES HUM OR CORRECTLY TO AVOID INTERFERENCE V Insert all cable plugs firmly into their jacks. Place the audiolvideo cables to the sides of the'rV's back panel instead of straight down the middle after you connect your components. V Try not to coil any twin-lead cables and keep them away from the audio/video cables as much as possible. Make sure all antennas and cables are properly grounded. Refer to the SafetyTips sheet packed with your unit. PROTECT YOUR COMPONENTS V FROM OVERHEATING Do not block ventilation holes in any of the components. Arrange the components so that air can circulate freely. Do not stack components. Allow adequate ventilation when placing your components in a stand. V CONNECTIONS V Place an amplifier or satellite receiver on the top shelf of the stand so heated air rising from it will not flow around other components. 53 CONNECTING TH E VCR TO TH E TV Refer to these pages to help determine the best way to connect the VCR to a TV, stereo, or cable box. SELECTING RF JACKS AND JACKS AND COAXIAL CABLES CABLES (F-TYPE) The RF jacks provide good picture and mono sound quality, and must be used if audio/video connections are not available for your TV. These jacks are required for antenna or cable-TV connections. The RF jacks on the VCR are labeled ANT. IN and RF OUT. The coaxial cable supplied with your VCR is RF Jack used to connect the VCR's RF OUT jack and your TV's antenna input. AUDIO/VIDEO (A/V) JACKS AND CABLES (RCA- TYPE) AudioNideo jacks provide very good picture quality and stereo sound, and can be used if your TV has AN input jacks. Generally, if AN jacks are used, a line INPUT "channel" needs to be tuned to in order to see the picture. For detailed information about the TV's input source channel, see "Finding the TV's Video Input Channel" References section of this manual. A/V jacks can be used for most connections in the between components. The VCR's AN jacks are color coded (yellow for video, red for RIGHT audio, and white for LEFT/MONO audio). If your TV only has one input for audio, a Yadapter may be needed to hear sound from both the left and right channels (the adapter will be plugged into the VCR's LEFT audio out jack). 54 Audio/Video Jack CHOOSING THE RIGHTVCR There are several different CONNECTION ways to connect your VCR, depending on whether or not you have cable service, if you have a cable box to see this service, whether some of the cable channels are scrambled, and so on Three connectionsaredescribedinthissectionand one of them should provideyou with a VCR connectionthatworks. • TVwith RFjackonly • TV with Audiofideo jacks • TV with Audiofideo jacks and a cable box to unscramble pay channels only If you need to connect additional components not shown in the diagrams here (and are unsure of how to connect them), refer to the instruction manual that came with that particular component ADVANTAGES OF AUDIO/VIDEO CABLE CONNECTIONS Using a simple coaxial cable connection gives you good picture quality, If your television has AUDIONIDEO jacks though, it is highly recommended that you use them to get even better picture quality and Hi-Fi stereo sound when recording and playing back videotapes. These connections give you more convenient antenna operation by not having to share the TV's signal. If you are having a hard time understanding the TV's Video Input Channel, refer to page 68 for more information. 55 TV WITH RF JACK ONLY THIS CONNECTION ASSUMES: • You are connecting • Your television THIS CONNECTION antenna, cable, or cable box system. has only an RF input jack.
