―Know how to apply/use/do a‖ is used, when a procedure/method exists. The learning goal type can
be used with methods, formats, applications, calculations, etc.
Example:
If this learning goal type, for instance, is linked to the topic ―Card Sorting‖ (a special knowledge
elicitation technique), the learning goal ―know how to apply/use/do a: Card Sorting‖ means to know
how to do conduct a Card Sorting session with domain experts, how to prepare Card Sorting sessions,
and how to log the results. However, ―Know how to apply/use/do a: card sorting‖ does not mean to
know in which situation Card Sorting is indicated, or which are advantages and disadvantages of the
technique. Therefore, the learning goal type ―Know how to apply/use/do a‖ does not include ―Basic
knowledge about‖ or ―Profound knowledge of‖ a certain topic.
APOSDLE use case:
The learner wants to know how to apply/use/do a <domain element>
The knowledge worker wants to know what the (next) steps are in a procedure or a well defined task
that s/he has to perform, but that s/he is not able to carry out without some guidance. S/he searches
for information that tells him which steps there are and which order they have to be completed. This
information is like a recipe or prescription. Furthermore, s/he likes to have an example or
demonstration of the procedure.

goal analysis for a company;

for project management, Gantt charts, resource planning, etc.

―Know how to apply/use/do a: substance fixtures‖: ability to perform a survey of chemical

7.4.1.4 ―Know how to produce‖
Definition
The learning goal type ―Know how to produce‖ means to be able to create, produce, or build a certain
topic, for instance a ―task model‖. In this sense, ―know how to produce‖ means the ability of a person
to achieve a certain outcome without a specified rule or procedure. Therefore, ―know how to produce‖
has to be linked to topics that refer to results (e.g., project report), or products (e.g., build a software).
Example
If this learning goal type is linked to a topic, for instance ―Wiki content‖, the learning goal ―know how to
produce: Wiki content‖ means that a person knows the Wiki setup and notation, and is able to edit the
Wiki content. In this case, ―profound knowledge of: Wiki content‖ is a prerequisite of ―know how to
produce: Wiki content‖, and therefore a task that requires the learning goal ―know how to produce:
Wiki content‖ would also require the learning goal ―profound knowledge of: Wiki content‖. However,
this is no general rule.
The decision whether the ability to edit the content of the Wiki is specified by the learning goal ―know
how to produce: Wiki content‖ or ―know how to apply/use/do: APOSDLE Wiki‖ is on the knowledge
