To specify two layers of insulation, check the Two Layer Insulation System box.
Once you are back on the Basic tab, you will see that the insulation properties are
grayed out which indicates that a two-layer system is being used.
Inner Layer
Select the insulation type to be used in direct contact with the pipe from the list. In a
two-layer system, the Inner Layer is often one that can withstand a high maximum
pipe temperature, but may not have very good thermal properties (relatively high
thermal conductivity).
You can add, modify, or delete an insulation Type by clicking the
insulation Type field.

Enter the inner layer Thickness. Enter a thickness sufficient to ensure that its outer
surface temperature is below the temperature rating of the outer insulation.
Outer Layer
Select the insulation type to be used on top of the inner layer. In a two-layer system,
the Outer Layer is often one that has very good thermal properties (relatively low
thermal conductivity) but cannot withstand a high pipe temperature without a
primary heat barrier.
You can add, modify, or delete an insulation Type by clicking the
insulation Type field.

Enter the Thickness of the outer layer. Be sure that the temperature gradient results
in an acceptable temperature for the product’s rating at the interface.
Over Size Insulation
Over size insulation applies to when the thermal insulation inner diameter must be
larger than the nominal outer diameter of a particular pipe in order to accommodate
the heating cable. Over sizing is not necessary if the insulation is compressible, or if
the pipe is large.
Click the Use Over Size Insulation box if you wish to specify over sized insulation
for your heat-tracing design. There is no need to enter a value in the Over Size
Diameter box as the program will automatically pick the dimension specified in the
Pipe Size Table, which will often be the next largest size insulation to fit your pipe
diameter. To see the value that has been picked, close then reopen the Insulation
Advanced Options dialog box. You can override this automatic selection by entering
a value, which will only be used for this line.
The program will base its calculations on this over sized insulation.
Temperatures
For a complete design and product selection of a heat-tracing system, TraceCalc Pro
must have information about the following temperatures:
Maintain
The Maintain temperature is the desired temperature at which you want to maintain
the pipe by the use of heat tracing.
