Each solvent position has a bottle filter to prevent particulate from entering the valve
system. For replacement procedures, see Section 4.3.2. A Teflon encapsulated O-ring in
a Teflon insert establishes the bottle seals and is inert to the reagents. Damage to the
insert or O-rings will result in N2 leakage and potential loss of reagent (volatiles like TFA,
DCM). For bottle seal replacement procedures, see Section 4.9.
CAUTION - PRIOR TO INSTALLING OR REMOVING SOLVENT BOTTLES,
MAKE SURE THE SOLVENT CABINET SLIDING SHELF IS IN TO PREVENT
INJURY.
To install a solvent bottle, first verify that the solution line has a bottle filter and
that the O-ring is properly installed in the bottle insert. Dress the line so that it is straight
to go to the bottom of the bottle (FEP tubing can be 'molded' by gentle bending, do not
'kink' or the tubing integrity will be compromised). Attach the cap and tighten to a firm
hand tight.
Each solvent position has a fluid sensor to detect the presence or absence of fluid.
The seven solvent fluid sensors are located in the SONATA® cabinet next to the
pneumatic inlet assembly. Alternative bottle sizes and configurations are available.
Custom configurations can be arranged through technical service.
1.2.7 WASTE SYSTEM
The SONATA® utilizes two 20-liter waste containers for storage of all wastes
from the instrument. The only exit for the closed flow paths of the instrument is through
the waste system. Each container is fitted with a solution level switch to prevent
overfilling. When one of the containers is full, the waste is diverted to the other container
and a 'WASTE 1 FULL' message will appear on the bottom left corner of the main menu
screen. If both containers are full, all operations in the instrument will stop automatically.
A 'WASTE 1 & 2 FULL' message will appear on the display and in the progress files of
the synthesis that was in progress. No operations will be allowed until at least one
container is emptied and reconnected.
IMPORTANT - BOTH WASTE CONTAINERS BEING FULL IS A CRITICAL
ERROR ON THE SONATA®. TO PREVENT OVERFILLING, THE
INSTRUMENT WILL AUTOMATICALLY PAUSE ALL OPERATIONS AND
VENT ALL SUPPLY BOTTLES, AA'S AND SOLV'S. TO RESUME
OPERATIONS, FIRST EMPTY AND RECONNECT A CONTAINER, THEN
PRESSURIZE THE SUPPLY BOTTLES. GO TO MAIN SCREEN AND PRESS
GO TO RESUME OPERATIONS.
The waste container level switches are wired in a normally closed (NC)
configuration so if the switch is disconnected, it is the same as if the container is full. This
logic prevents waste being delivered to a disconnected container. The connectors are
made of peek and gold plated contacts for resistance to the aggressive waste solutions.
